The Spirit
Jan. 4th, 2009 08:21 pmThe Spirit, to the surprise of none, is every bit as awful as the trailers and early publicity would have one believe.(
yendi still wins for saying that the Spirit's endless musings on "My city..." reminded him of The Tick: "The City... my the City...") The film's endless shots taken to no great effect from Sin City... Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson's showing up for no discernible reason in Nazi uniforms at one point... a forgettable lead... there are occasional brief moments of visual grace, and (intentional) amusement- but really, this is this year's Alexander. Do not watch unless, like me,you have a morbid fascination with seeing just how far Frank Miller could fall. (Actually, after The Dark Knight Strikes Again, this is more like a lateral transfer.)
(Conversely, The Wrestler is amazing, and every bit as realistic as The Fountain was not; I could go on about the characters or the story, but really, it's all there in the ruined glory of Mickey Rourke's face. Strongly recommend.)
