Random: I'm the sort of odd duck who prefers stories of (British) civilians during WWII (such as HOPE AND GLORY) to combat films (although I obviously can appreciate films on the order of BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI, THE DAM BUSTERS, or A BRIDGE TOO FAR). Accordingly, 1) please drop any recs of movies of Brits on the home front struggling bravely through the war here (since I *hope* this thing of not being able to watch new movies is not permanent), and 2) if I should mention that my favorite film of WWII involving combat is THE THIN RED LINE (like it or hate it, it's *highly* atypical of the genre), please be kind and chalk it up to my being the sort of barbarian who puts ketchup on my steak.

I like to think of this preference as looking for non-gratuitous combat that moves the plot forward. If any. I prefer the caper movies more, e.g. THE GREAT ESCAPE or THE TRAIN -- or, yes, RIVER KWAI.

What about THE SECRET OF SANTA VITTORIA?

Is television also acceptable: Foyle's War, a British mystery series that started in 2002; 28 episodes thru 2015. Sometimes British mysteries can be reassuring, gritty and realistic without grimdark, but at least one puzzle gets solved by the end.

TV I have heard of but not seen: Land Girls (2009). No mysteries, just stories. Of course there's also a movie (1998) based on a book (1994), but I've no experience of those either.
