Sam Mendes to direct Robert Downey Jr. as the Wizard of Oz.

(And for what it's worth, it seems John Boorman is currently working on his own Oz movie.)

It was probably either that, or Tim Burton directing Johnny Depp as the Wizard. (I could also see Terry Gilliam directing John Cleese in this role, though the Wizard of Oz should really be an American.)

Re: Gilliam- that's very true- and. come to think of it, he and Depp have worked together before (on Fear and Loathing and Parnassus). In some ways, I think Burton and Depp should take a vacation from each other- Burton's brilliant, but Depp's work with him has little of the life and surprise of, say, his work in the Pirates films.
