Every once in a while, Greg, the piano player at the piano bar I frequent most regularly, and I will randomly call phrases to each other at the end of a song. We’re friends away from the bar; we obviously don’t do it when some nervous new person is waiting to sing; just every once in a while, when it gets a bit later in the evening, we’ll give each other a random shout out. Last night, as I recall, it was, “Greg- war is over, if you want it.” To which he replied, “Fred- don’t put your foot on the heart brake.”

Well, all right; it might have ended there… but sometimes, when things are slow, Greg will chat with the customers a bit. It turned out that there were a few other Kate Bush fans about (including roadnotes, and a guy who mentioned owning all her albums on both CD and vinyl; he thinks her weakest album is The Red Shoes; “wow aside, I’d pick Lionheart; we began a brief discussion of favorite songs, which segued into increasingly facetious requests (heard “Delius” at a piano bar lately?) Then, the hour grew late; Roadnotes and I were preparing to leave... and Greg, enabler that he is, starts playing “And Dream of Sheep.” Well, all right; we’d stick around for that, and sing along. Then, he segued into “Under Ice” (another song you won’t often hear at a piano bar)... and then, “Waking the Witch.” Greg does this every once in a blue moon (gtrout has been there for this as well): he’ll get the momentum going, and simply go through the second side of “Hounds of Love,” murmured background vocals and all, and it’s wonderful. When we left, Velma and I each hugged the guy who’d mentioned owning KB’s work on CD and vinyl; simply one of those nights at piano bar.

I will observe that I suggested "The Ninth Wave," after Greg played "The Man with the Child in His Eyes," and that's what led to the album side being sung. Well, that, and most of the people left being either Kate Bush fans or, like Michael, patient with us lunatics.
