Via [livejournal.com profile] rm: A group of Twin Cities Quakers has decided to stop signing marriage certificates for opposite-sex couples until the state legalizes gay marriage.

"We're simply trying to be consistent with the will of God as we perceive it," said Paul Landskroener, clerk of the Twin Cities Friends Meeting, in an interview with MPR's All Things Considered on Monday.

The Quakers really know how to do civil disobedience. :) Married in the eyes of God if not the law; very elegant. I hope this practice spreads.

Here in Pennsylvania you don't need a license, precisely because it's a Quaker-founded state. These particular Quakers aren't very Quakery, seems to me. Entirely apart from the merits of gay marriage, it also strikes me as a posturing thing to do.
