From an LJ entry elsewhere:

"I was so thrilled when I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey," said Amy. "It's like, suddenly, a whole bunch of Simpsons gags made sense!"

"I felt the same way when I saw Citizen Kane," Erin replied. "It's like, 'Oh, I get all those Montgomery Burns gags now!'"

Proof again (as a late friend were wont to say) "the more you know, the more jokes you get."

Yes, until you realize that you've watched too many movies that no one else has recently, and are cracking jokes from Dinner at eight that fall flat in just about any room.

The town where I grew up had no cinema and only one TV channel. We didn't get a VCR until I was 16. Fortunately, my girlfriend gave me a good movie education in my 20s and so many jokes suddenly became clear!

If only there were some other reason to watch classics of cinema, besides just "Oh, now I get the in-jokes." Like, y'know, maybe these movies might have some purpose and value in their own right, rather than just as supporting material for The Simpsons?

Wikipedia/Cliffs Notes FTW when it comes to getting cultural references.

...mind you, I usually have to use Wikipedia to look up Simpsons jokes, not classic film. (I looked those up in a book ages ago in childhood, but I haven't had TV in forever and don't like comedies.)

One part of my mind felt that way when I saw Casablanca for the first time (some ten, twelve years ago): the rest got swept up by the movie. But suddenly some jokes make much more sense.
