I just spoke to my sister; today, she went with Dad to visit his primary care physician and his cardiologist. Yes, his tricuspid valve is deteriorating- understandable, for a man in his late 80s- but at a slow, gradual rate; both of them said that he could live with this for 10 more years. While I'm *not* brushing this off completely- he could fail to wake up tomorrow, as could you or I; he's on blood thinners for an irregular heartbeat, which would make surgery problematic- the panic response is definitely abating. Weirdly appropriate- as well as frustrating- that this is all happening when I'm on the other side of the country, rather than just a few hours away.
