To prevent this from happening to you: make sure that the email address you gave when you started your journal is still in your control and has not lapsed. If it has, go here: https://www.livejournal.com/set_secret.bml and tell LJ to ask you a security question before it will let you reset your password. That should stitch your journal up tight. (Thanks to copperbadge for boosting the signal on this.)

The thing is, I know I have an LJ email address, but I've literally never used it. I don't even know how to check it! How do I check it?

Wouldn't it effectively be the gmail address you have listed on your LJ info? (So that, were I to email you at leighdb at lj, wouldn't it just route to that addy anyway? Sorry if I'm misunderstanding your question; my office is currently a coffee-free zone.)

Yes. Those are autoforwards, not mailboxes. redbird@livejournal.com forwards to the same place most of my other mail does.

Well, that's what I thought, but a while back someone tried to give me permission to make entries on a comm they had created on LJ, and it never showed up at my gmail address.

He said I'd have to check my livejournal addy to get the invite... which effectively meant I never got it, since I have no idea how to check the livejournal email address. There doesn't seem to be any way to get to it from LJ directly! (Granted, I never really tried that hard, but sheesh.)
