"Look, Jerry," Vittorio said, as he took out a large volume and put it on the table. "After I read Apocalypse I talked with Francis, then I began to think of artists. Who speaks Apocalypse Now?"
"I don't know," I admitted; I was way out of my league.
"Paul Gauguin. You know him? Look, Jerry," and Vittorio opened the huge art book and turned to a work by Gauguin. It was Gauguin's allegorical painting Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?
"Jerry, look at the jungle leaves," Vittorio began; the tone of his soft voice seemed to stroke the painting. "See all the greens? Look at just the dark greens. Ah, Jerry, see?... Look, Jerry, here. See the bright yellow, the red... This is the color from Joe Lombardi's smoke grenades, you know?... See here, the dark greens. Brooding jungle, Jerry. Like in Apocalypse Now. See here, the darkness, the danger, the fear? Brooding, you understand?"
"And this speaks of Apocalypse?" I asked.
"Yes, the colors... Look, Jerry," he continued, as he had gotten some news magazine photos of the Vietnam War. He pointed at the bright-colored smoke grenades against the dark of the jungle vegetation. "Look at the photo, Jerry.
