I've been watching De Mille's The Ten Commandments (the '56 version), and I have to say: while his command of historical fact is weak (for one thing, the pyramids weren't built with slave labor), and his work with actors uneven (although Yul Brynner walks away with the movie), the man had more sheer storytelling brio than any other director I can think of. This movie has much more energy than most costume epics, and the plague of green death is creepy; it's hard to believe De Mille was 76 when he shot this. (Conversely, while the first half of the Taylor/Burton Cleopatra is interesting- Rex Harrison is a brilliant Caesar, and Roddy McDowall an extremely cannily cast Octavian, and the script pays nice attention to such details as Caesar's epilepsy- things go downhill fast once Harrison's out of the picture, and we're left with Taylor and Burton mooing at each other. I wound up falling asleep.)
I started feeling queasy yesterday afternoon; last night, I spent half the night trekking to and from the bathroom. I've managed to make one run for supplies (mostly soup and Gatorade); I'm trying to get an emergency doctor's appointment, but no luck so far. I'm hoping that this is food poisoning; if so, based on past history, the worst should be over by tonight. Either way, I'm going to miss Christmas with my family (in Massachusetts) for the first time in my life.
