Song to the West

coyotegothAt first, you don't even realize what you're seeing- merely a band of whitish rock, concealed behind a row of trees. Then, you step forward, and the trees part, and it's just there, an infinity of red and orange and gold, dropping down to the Colorado somewhere far below.
Made myself get the picture-taking part of things out of the way early; I'd gotten up at 4:30 (MST, but still) to ensure I'd be there before the light changed. For the next several minutes, things were just a blur of clicking and composing and deciding if I wanted these other tourists in the frame or not... then click, and the last frame was gone, and I almost felt relieved. Camera & such away (pictures when I can scan them at my sister's, sometime next week), and I was just myself again, newly thirty-five and communing with such natural splendor. Such a blessing to live in a world where I can wake up one day and think, You know, I'd like to be at the Grand Canyon on the nineteenth... and now, here I am.
