of DC and points beyond
Oct. 12th, 2003 12:09 amHeard from a friend who's hearing from someone they have no urge whatsoever to hear from today, as I sit here at a friend's computer in DC, visiting people. You know the type of hanger-on I mean: eerily tenacious; manipulative; just this side of truly loathsome. She- my friend-is far west, or I'd offer to have words with the chap myself; instead, I could only remind her of some of the best words I know for situations like these:
Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered,
I have fought my way here,
to the castle beyond the goblin city
to take back the child that you have stolen,
for my will is as strong as yours,
and my kingdom is as great.
You have no power over me.
Edited to say: Apropos of nothing, I really, really like living in a world where the pianist at my favorite piano bar is willing to learn "Waterloo Sunset," simply because I asked him to. (Yes, I tipped him.)

Date: 2003-10-12 05:36 am (UTC)My sympathies to your friend. I've been doing my best, over the past few years, to get those sorts of people out of my life, and perhaps more importantly for me, trying to call on all my internal strengths not to let the fear of their possible return constrain my actions. (Mixed success on that last, but getting better.)
And yes, we do live in a world that's enjoyable.

Date: 2003-10-12 06:59 am (UTC)But seriously, I had someone in my life who walked all over me and then we parted ways. I made that quote my mantra and used the experience to make sure no one ever did that to me again. I was able to get over him and the way he treated me and became a stronger person because of it. Then many years later I ran into him and we played catchup over coffee. I looked him straight in the eyes and said "You have no power over me". And you know what? By then he didn't. It was an exhilirating feeling to both know it and have an opportunity to say it.
I've both had people in my life like that and been foolish enough to act like that myself. Either way it's no good. You offered her wonderful advice.

Date: 2003-10-12 10:17 am (UTC)now, you just wander down to the Eastern Market for some splendid apples and your day will be perfect.
we're headed for a stroll on the Mall. Will walk down along the US Capitol, pausing to admire all the beautiful trees planted there, and generally enjoy the glorious day.
:) welcome to my city again!
