Strange, fidgety mood yesterday, which began when I was at the office, and continued at piano bar. The evening itself was fun as always, but I found it hard to concentrate; would up leaving early, and walking home over the Williamsburg bridge. That didn't do the trick, either; wound up hopping on my bike (no, I wasn't drunk; had had one beer, which I didn't finish) and riding for a couple of hours, then coming home and reading photo books until dawn. Then, a trip to the gym before work today; if not relaxed, I am certainly well-exercised.

Odd, lovely moment as I was walking my bike home for a couple of blocks, letting my legs cool; I began to sing "Take me Home, Country Roads," the song I sing at voice lessons. There, I'm hyperaware of posture, breath control, and a hundred other technical issues; I tend to concentrate too hard on performing the song as correctly as is possible, and tense up to the point where the music of my voice is largely lost. Here, alone, with the slight chill of the night air adding a welcome huskiness to my voice, I was able to sing, and the song flowed through me as it never had before. Must work my way to doing this in front of actual people, at an actual piano bar- without the bicycle, perhaps.

Although I understand why they're useful, I find myself biased against voice lessons for exactly the reasons you described. I miss the music of my voice.

Actually, I've gotten any number of useful, practical tips from the lessons- it's simply easier to implement them into actual song when I'm in a less formal situation. f

i agree. my voice was absolutely terrible before i started lessons, and then i could sing! of course, it's been a few years since then, so now i sound like a dying toad again..

I was originally from NYCGOTH and then I fell into that sick little twisted OhMyGoth bit. My chat handle had been a number of things, I am the x-fiance of Jason bostridge otherwise known as Summanus.

Well, singing could be seen like craft: Know technique, then apply in everyday life.

I absolutely find that working on technique and thinking about it too much can get stressful, but having it in the memory banks is what it's all about. Then you pull it out without even realizing it. It's just having the knowledge available to you.

This is very true; I've been encountering that in re-studying photography more than once.e
