I wish I could say that this type of stupid, counter-productive blind arrogance was surprising- alas, it's simply in keeping with what Shrub has been doing all along.
I fail to see how stating, bluntly and up front, that your country will not support a war which its people feel is unjust can be construed as "treachery".
The U.S. pulled the same stunt with Yemen during the first Gulf War: When Yemen voted against the UN sanction for war against Iraq, a U.S. diplomat came over and told them, "That was the most expensive vote you've ever made." The next day, all U.S. funding for Yemen was pulled immediately.
To be honest, I would love to see this become a reality: I feel it would have two major impacts: 1.) Lessened U.S. presence in Europe- Given the fact that the EU is starting to emerge as a world superpower, this could provide further impetus towards that becoming a reality.
2.) Germany is Übermenschland- Germany is already the 3rd most economically powerful country in the world. While the potential for this position to be compromised is present in Dubya's threatening actions, if Germany can keep this economic strength after these actions become reality (assuming the threats are actually carried through), they could be the shining example- along with Venezuela and Brazil- of showing that a country doesn't need the US in its life.
As Eddie Izzard once said about our Pledge of Allegiance: "You and the Romans have been the only two countries to have put your hand over your heart, so be very careful!"
