1- Just watching The Unearthly Child, the very first Doctor Who store ever, from 1963. William Hartnell curmudgeoning his way through things as First Doctor (imagine this Doctor meeting Jack Harkness!); incredibly verbose cavemen; a rather neat trick involving torches and skulls. Next up: The Daleks! *ominous music*

(BTW, did you know that the Daleks were originally supposed to be designed by then-BBC staff designer Ridley Scott?)(I think I'm going to watch all the Doctor Who stories I have in order: pre-Eccleston, roughly half of these consist of Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker and his scarf); all the Doctors except Colin Baker are represented at least once, though.)(Did you ever wonder- if the Doctor's supposed to be seven hundred and something, and his broadcast incarnation (ie, Hartnell through Matt Smith) live an average of about three years apiece, how many incarnations did he have before Hartnell?)(OK, enough parentheses.)

2- Am now watching The Muppets Take Manhattan, the last of the Muppet movies to feature Jim Henson, as well as a song called "Saing Goodbye" that is ESSENCE OF SNIFFLES. 15-year-old me, why didn't you like this better?

AHAHAHAHAHAHA!

The reaction of my brother, who was only familiar with Nine and Ten, upon seeing One deliver an electric shock to Ian in the TARDIS: "Oh my god, he's an asshole. How did this guy become a hero?!?"

How indeed? :D

(And this reminds me that I still want to write Jack Harkness picking up Arthur Dent, and having an accident with the Infinite Improbability drive in the process.)

Saying Goodbye, The Love Is Gone, and I'm Going To Go Back There Someday are the saddest Muppet songs ever recorded.

Actually, Eccleston's Doctor lived about 300 years. Tennant was one of the shortest, at a little more than a century. Smith has been 200 so far - he fucked off for *centuries* to avoid arriving at the time and place of his own death.

Something about the obligatory timey-wimey things: When the Doctor leaves his Companions, he wanders, often for decades, before finding a new one.

I guess the only exception would be Donna, who found him.

Not necessarily the *only* exception - after all, he very rarely deliberately chooses his companions in the sense of looking for someone to go with him. And humans have known about the Doctor and jumped him mid-travel when he happens to cross their timestream before - UNIT made a science of it.

No, that's not what I mean. There was no break between Rose and Donna that I saw. He's still wiping his tears from Rose when Donna appears on the TARDIS deck in the Runaway Bride. All the other companions I can think of (Classic and NuWho) there was a scene change that allowed for the Doctor to have conceivably whisked away for some time.

Of course, she didn't become a companion until later, but I count it as he did offer for her to come with him in the end.

Ah!

He's swapped companions without downtime in the past, too. Donna's not the only new one to arrive right after the old one leaves.

(And, there was a ton of downtime after that, before Donna successfully hunted him down.)

When was there no downtime? No scenes of him in the TARDIS appearing when you think, "Oh he could've gone somewhere, for who knows how long!"

I can't think of any, my brain is stalling.

The very first episode ever shows exactly that happening: He picks up the schoolteachers despite already having his granddaughter. Later, he drops the granddaughter off and keeps the schoolteachers.

Yes, but he keeps Susan on with Ian and Barbara, so I don't think that's exactly what I mean. I mean going from being alone to a new companion, when it's possible that he goes off wandering for decades or more by himself-like you stated in your first comment.

Also, I dunno if you can count Susan as a companion...she's his granddaughter and a time lord. I was thinking more of the random people he takes on, his island of misfit companions :)

Sure, and look at Jack Harkness, who *literally* jumped him/the TARDIS.

That was not UNIT science.

But sure.

I WISH I WAS WATCHING THIS WITH YOU INSTEAD OF WORKING.

I have ALL of the classic who stories, ever, I think. Just, y'know, sayin'

;)

Also, Muppets Take Manhattan is the greatest thing ever. I dunno what was wrong with the 15 year old you, but I'm glad you've grown!
