A question- when and how did you first hear about Harry Potter?

I have no idea. It was maybe around the time the second, third or maybe even 4th book came out. Pretty sure it was before any movies. I don't know how.

The year Goblet of Fire the book came out, after repeated and insistent campaigning from my sister, I borrowed the first couple of books from a friend.

In high school. (I think I first read the books in French translation during A-levels.)

When did I first hear? I think I read a NY Times article about the books during college, probably around 1999-2000. But I refused to read them then, because I didn't have time for a kids' book during college.

When the first movie came out (sometime around the 4th book I guess?) I went to the movie because my roommate insisted I would love Alan Rickman as this hot dark bastard of a teacher.

Early 1998, age 10. A hyperliterate family friend had read and loved it and gave me a copy of the UK edition (then the only edition). I read like eight chapters or so and abandoned it out of boredom, and didn't actually read the rest until early 2000, by which time my close friends had gotten into it and bugged me like crazy about it. Liked it this time and zipped through the first three just in time for the GoF release hullabaloo.

We were living in Albany at the time, so it must have been around 1999. My chief source of news at the time was my in-laws' copies of Newsweek - I definitely read about the books before I read them. I may have read the first book at my in-laws' house as well - they got the paperbacks before we did - but I remember being sucked in by it, breezing through in a day or two, and then going right on to the second one. I got Azkaban and Goblet out of the library and I remember staying up late at night to finish.

In later years my kids and housemates and I did the midnight release parties, costumes and all. I miss those.

I recall getting into a discussion about it with a friend of my parents who is a librarian, surely no later than 1998 because I remember the discussion happening at my parents' old house and they moved shortly after. There was some sort of a controversy at the time (in the US, anyway) that the book somehow promoted witchcraft and shouldn't be allowed in schools.

Posts on RASFW, somewhere around when the third book came out, which got me curious enough to go out and buy the first book.

I bought my son the first book after asking at the local bookstore for recommendations - this was just before they announced the movie deal in the UK.

I think I'd heard of it vaguely during the year or two before the first movie came out, but never paid a whole lot of attention. I didn't start reading until a couple of months before the first film release.

Library, from one of my two fave librarians. The first book had just come out and they told me I would love it. I read it on spring break in 1999 and followed all of the releases from Chamber of Secrets on thereafter.
