My apartment mate was out of town for the 4th; after my other apartment mate and I both indicated that we couldn't take care of his cat Tommi (the blert! cat)- who's 16, and battling cancer- he left her in his room (which none of us have the key to), and left on vacation with his girlfriend. A couple of days later, when I came back from an overnight stay, she was meowing loudly- a distress meow- and my apartment mate wasn't answering his cell phone: he was supposed to have been home that night. After about an hour's struggle, Boogie (apartment mate #3) and I were able to get into his room; we rigged an impromptu litter box in the kitchen (which Tommi hates- she's scared of the other cats), and fed and watered her. (I timed it: when we put a water bowl in front of her, she drank for three minutes straight.)

Z came home this afternoon, with some flip remark about thanking me for taking care of the cat; at least he gave me a key to his room, so that this- we hope- doesn't happen again.

"Next time, she'll probably be dead when you come home," I said. He went into some song and dance about how he'd been gone for equivalent lengths of time before, and she'd been OK (although I doubt that that was in the full heat of summer- his room has no AC- not to mention that she needs medication that was locked in his room) and and and... Long story short, he hadn't wanted to come home earlier. It's bizarre: he dotes and her, and has spent thousands of dollars on her medical care... and then he does this.

"Next time, just fucking have her put to sleep," I snarled; it's been years since I've been so close to punching someone. I'm going to take a long bike ride; I don't want to be around people right now.

And this from one who knows. (Then again, I just threatened to punch him in the face during a heated argument; not one of my own finest moments =/

I would have threatened similar, even with the height difference.

That is some shit and a half.

Don't be so hard on yourself. Z could defend himself against your punch, the cat couldn't defend herself against his crapitude.

A very valid point; thank you.

Geez, what an asshole! Not only is that terrible treatment of the cat, it ignores that even if the cat was "fine" i.e. still alive when he got back, you and your other apartment mate would be listening to this sad, agitated cat for days without the ability to do anything.

Did you ever get my email, by the way? I had to postpone my visit, but I should be up there by August.

Had it been me I'd have called NYC animal control. But then I have zero tolerance for shit like that.

that's just disgusting!! I was gone for a couple of nights, and my friends came over the check on her and make sure she was okay, and that she got her treats. They've even offered to take care of her, should I go on an extended trip sometime. I couldn't just leave her, and I don't understand how people can do that! I don't blame you for being mad!

I lived with someone who did this to his pregnant cat. When we finally got into the room she had eaten one of her kittens. The others were OK.

Later in the summer he gave away the kitten that had been sleeping with me every night for 8 weeks straight.

Fucking assholes man. I really want to punch Z (not Tommi! Whoops).

I just threatened to punch him in the face during a heated argument about all this- not one of my proudest moments, but not one I'm about to apologize for, either.

It's an appalling way to treat a pet, and it's also an appalling way to treat friends and neighbours. Words fail me on this. Z is a selfish, brainless ...

When we left our cat to go to our grandmother's in summer, our mother filled up two or three of those huge 3lb "butter" containers with water and one or two with dry food. He could go about a week like that and still have water and food when we got home. We didn't have anyone our mother trusted enough to catsit.

Even in a home with other people or a dedicated catsitter, she should have had a ton of water out.

Some people shouldn't be allowed to exist, let alone own pets.

You were justified in wanting to punch him. He just blithely tortured an animal.

:(:(:(

I can't tell you how many times that I've wished I could have taken Tommi home with me when we broke up. Sadly I'm in no position to take her now. She's such a sweetheart too. Z is so not good in the responsibility dept. I'm glad you read him the riot act.
