Well, through the good graces of an Amazon gift card I've forgotten about, I know find myself in the soon-to-be possession of the first two seasons of Torchwood, flying their way here as I type this. Really must catch up on Tennant-era Who, esp. "Empty Child" and "Doctor Dances," neh? Let's re-view advice I once got from [livejournal.com profile] rm on this very subject:

To recap:

We first meet Jack in "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" which is a two-part episode in the first season of new Who. It is also some of the finest TV writing ever. From there, you should watch the rest of that season until Jack is no longer traveling with the Doctor. Watch this BEFORE Torchwood.

THere's also a Tenth Doctor episode Jack is not in called "The Christmas Invasion" that you should also watch in order to have context for something that is background noise and an in joke early in TW season 1, and is a plot point at the end of it.

THEN, between Torchwood seasons 1 and 2 you need to watch from the Tenth Doctor episode "Utopia" through the end of that season (I forgoet if it's a 2 or 3 parter) so that you can understand where Jack is coming from when he reappears again at the beginning of TW, S2. The end of this little chunk of Doctor Who episodes also reveals something that may make you want to watch "The End of the World", "New Earth" and "Gridlock" -- while these are not important to understand TW, they are important to the overall view of Jack's arc once you complete watching CoE. "Gridlock" is also about New York City (sort of) and is some of the FINEST TV writing I've ever seen.

After S2, you have to watch the Journey's End arc on Doctor Who (again either 2 or 3 episodes, I always forget) before watching CoE.

THEN you have to watch the 10th Doctor's final episodes because of a small coda Jack has in it.

Hrrm; I've seen "Utopia," and started watching "Empty Child (Ninth Doctor, not Tenth, which surprised me). Hmm... must scratch up another such card, and dig into the Tennant years, it seems...

If this advice was from rm - that's the path we followed, and it worked very well. Although I think we just watched the whole season of Dr Who after TW S2, because the Dr Who is awesome.

Yup, it was [livejournal.com profile] rm. (Should I just call your cell on Sunday, btw? I'll email Saturday night, just in case.)

....ERm, "Empty Child" and "Doctor Dances" was Eccleston-era Who.

can it be, that I've watched more Torchwood than you? Is there finally a series I think you'll love that you haven't seen? say it ain't so!

Hope you're loving it. I'm gearing up to watch Torchwood again... maybe I'll try this path.

I've barely watched any TV (including most of Tennant-era Who, I might add), so it's actually rather likely :)

If you like, I may still have a spreadsheet around here somewhere that lists all of the 2005 and newer Who, TW, and SJA by air date. (And if I can't find it, it's easy to reconstruct.)

But yeah. The short-n-spoilery history of Captain Jack requires a bit of side-reading as it were.
