This link answers the hypothetical question, "How might the Harry Potter movies have been cast, had they been made in the 1940s"? (Somewhere, there's an entry I wrote in which I did this with Tolkien in the '50s. Peter Lorre as Gollum; Willis O' Brien animating Treebeard (voice by Orson Welles)... I should probably find that.

Date: 2011-01-26 03:52 am (UTC)Edmund Gwenn absolutely must be Dumbledore. (Santa from Miracle on 34th St, star of many a B-movie spectacular besides.) Claude Rains shall instead be Cornelius Fudge.
Alec Guinness shall take an early role as Lupin.
I expect that Bogie will try out for Lupin and get beat out, and Bogie will end up playing bad boy Sirius Black. (OMG, noir besuited Death Eaters squeeee!)
Jimmy Stewart gets to be Barty Crouch Jr. as Jimmy Stewart loves him some heel-turn crazy roles.
Vincent Price and Christopher Lee shall fight over the part of Lucius Malfoy; the loser shall play Mad-Eye Moody.
A young Ian McKellen will get his first movie role as Draco Malfoy.
Maureen O'Hara will make Lily ten times more awesome.
Peter Pettigrew has to be Peter Lorre. Or Else.
Shirley MacLaine might be about right for Tonks.
James Dean HAS to be the Hero of Hufflepuff. Lauren Bacall might be young enough to be the French girl. Charles Middleton or Ed G. Robinson as Karkarov.
Joan Crawford will either be Bellatrix or the evil teacher lady.
I desperately, desperately want to persuade Lawrence Olivier to play Lockhart. Because I am wrong wrong and wrong. He probably won't do it, so I'll get Gene Kelly instead.
