I rented Julian Schnabel's movie Basquiat at the Jefferson Market branch of the New York public library yesterday, and took it home; almost immediately, it started skipping (this is a recurring problem with NY public library DVDs- grr). I'm particularly exasperated by this, as I found Schnabel's The Diving Bell and the Butterfly to be a small masterpiece on a potentially excruciating subject; as it stands, I got I got far enough into Basquiat (about a minute) to have exactly two main impressions:

1) Huh- if I were making a movie about Jean-Michel Basquiat, "Fairytale of New York" would certainly be an interesting choice for main title music; pity I couldn't get more of a sense of how Schnabel intended it to comment on the movie (or his use of music in the movie in general).

2) David Bowie as Andy Warhol? Most brilliant casting EVER.

It also uses a Tom Waits song beautifully in a pivotal scene.

Have you tried using a DVD/CD scratch repair spray? It was the only thing that let us watch numerous Netflix discs.

I loved Basquiat. Jeffrey Wright is amazing.

Have you seen The Radiant Child? I'm hoping to catch up with it.
