Elton John sings at Rush Limbaugh's fourth wedding. I honestly can't figure out whether to be more put out by Limbaugh's "It's OK, so long as he's singing," or John's taking him up on it.

There might be the Elton John pisses away money faster than a herd of elephants at a beer bash factor at work here.

There's taking a moral stance and then there's your accountant calling you at 2:00 in the morning making choking sounds into the receiver.

Dig it- but in a world where the Stones were able to lease "Start Me up" to Microsoft for 12 mill, Elton John couldn't get an offer from someone who wasn't Rush Limbaugh? *Sigh*

Maybe Elton John doesn't know who Rush Limbaugh is or what he does? Still, you'd think you'd check where your money came from...

I always liked Roman Polanski's (I know, I know...) comment when he asked why his version of Macbeth was being backed by Playboy: "Money doesn't stink."

Know who Limbaugh is? Only from reading blogs.
Know where my money comes from? Yes.

How lovely for you! It must be quite an insanely warping piece of privilege virtue to have significant choices as to where your money comes from and where it goes*. Most people aren't that wealthy, even in a wealthy society; in fact, it's that lack of choice that *makes* our First World nations so wealthy.

* Of course you didn't claim that latter bit, but of course if it weren't true you wouldn't dare hold such a contemptuous attitude towards those that don't have that privilege virtue, would you?

This is confusing; are you saying that Elton John doesn't have a say in the people he chooses to perform for?

Of course he does. What does that have to do with the question at hand?

I'm trying to understand why lilacsigil's suggesting that Elton John should be more aware of the political leanings of, in this case, Rush Limbaugh (not exactly someone with a low public profile) brought forth so much sarcasm and vitriol from you, phrased in such a way as to make it sound as though lilacsigil were making a generalized criticism of peoples' failure to recognize where their money comes from, which she was not; it was clearly a specific criticism of John's behavior.

It's a snide dig at everyone who doesn't, which is to say--everyone invested through work into a pension plan, which category very well might include employees of the Australian government.

I was speaking of Elton John, not of people in general, so I'm rather surprised at the sudden vitriol. I think he's certainly someone with the ability to decide where his money is coming from. I am aware that this is a privilege, but it's one that he has so I don't think it's unreasonable to ask that he uses that privilege in a responsible manner.

In my case, I'm in a taxpayer-funded job, so I do, literally, know where my money comes from. It's not to make me better than other people - I am in a simple situation compared to most people and thus I could answer your question. I am aware that this is not the case for everyone.

Oh. You're making it simple by going back just one iteration, to "the State".

OK.

Here's the statement from his website: http://web.eltonjohn.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20100528&contentid=10526672

Honestly-- considering how much of his income he gives to AIDS research, I'm happy for him to keep playing anywhere and everywhere.
