I'm going through my books in preparation for my move at the end of August; in many cases, it's the first time I've really gone through all the boxes I packed back during the rout from California. Two crucial finds, I had long since relegated myself to having lost:

1) Volumes I-V of THE COMPLETE STORIES OF THEODORE STURGEON. These are the volumes given to me by my friends Velma (now deceased) and Soren, about which I have Feelings, beyond the treasure of the stories (and Paul Williams' story notes) themselves.

2) My high school yearbooks, tucked into one of which were some writings of mine from high school, including a rather puckish sequel to THE EFFECT OF GAMMA RAYS ON MAN-IN-THE-MOON MARIGOLDS (no, the Incredible Hulk isn't involved); a touching glimpse at younger Fred.

comments

Something I've realized: if I absolutely *had* to attempt suicide, have a nervous breakdown, and become homeless, all in the middle of a life-threatening global pandemic (which, of course, has affected millions of people worldwide much more than it did me- ie, fatally), then these were close to ideal circumstances for those things to happen. My sister called me at *just* the right moment on the phone, when I was heading down University to San Pablo, thence to the Albany Bulb, that I actually responded; she functioned ideally (as she has ever since) in finding a place for me to walk to, then staying on the phone with me until I was actually there.

The next day, after I'd gotten discharged (having realized in the interim that I needed to GTFO of that living situation much more than I needed to die), and was making my way through the forest of messages of concern and well-wishing, a friend from high school reached out on Facebook. I was planning to become homeless in a tent on the sidewalks of Oakland; instead, she reached out- a friend I'd not seen for decades- and invited me to stay with her while I got my life back together. Twyla- thank you, more than I can say <3 Along the way, I got back in touch with Jana, a friend who just happens to be a psychologist and who just happens to have known me since I was about four years old, which made me much more comfortable talking about things with her (although HIPAA regulations prevented her from actually treating me formally). My mental health being much more erratic when I first came here to the Overlook East, when I was in my room with the door locked for about 22-23 hours a day out of sheer anxiety, having someone I could talk to about mental health issues with whom I had that kind of connection was invaluable. (Indeed, at least once I was within an ace of going back to Strong, when Jana helped me ground myself.)(I'm not necessarily anxious *about* anything- when I had my breakdown, my brain's ability to regulate anxiety went away pretty much entirely.)

As a codicil to this, for the first four months or so that I was here, I couldn't watch movies that were new to me, because the simple fact of an unknown narrative provoked so much anxiety. [I was able to see Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods, but only by watching it in 2-3 minute increments over several days: obviously not practicable for all movies I might want to watch. I was a film major in college, although I graduated with a BA in English (long story); I remember that when the documentary Cinemania came out, I recognized every single one of the subjects; even before my breakdown, depression had attentuated my will to engage with new-to-me materials such that in recent years, I watched fewer than a dozen new films a year. When I was at the hospital, and was put on Lexapro (my first experience with psych meds), it was a revelation: for the first time, I realized how depression (a genetic legacy from my mother's side of the family) had gradually been stealing my life away, a bit at a time. Now, first-time lucky with meds, my brain is itself again; I can't wait to check out the libraries in Rochester and Brockport, and to hug my friends, and to *live* again.

comments

Random: I'm the sort of odd duck who prefers stories of (British) civilians during WWII (such as HOPE AND GLORY) to combat films (although I obviously can appreciate films on the order of BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI, THE DAM BUSTERS, or A BRIDGE TOO FAR). Accordingly, 1) please drop any recs of movies of Brits on the home front struggling bravely through the war here (since I *hope* this thing of not being able to watch new movies is not permanent), and 2) if I should mention that my favorite film of WWII involving combat is THE THIN RED LINE (love it or hate it, it's *highly* atypical of the genre), please be kind and chalk it up to my being the sort of barbarian who puts ketchup on my steak.

comments

I went to film school, although I wound up graduating as an English major (long story); when the documentary CINEMANIA (about lifestyle moviegoers) came out, I recognized every one of the subjects. Movies are a huge part of my life.

Since the breakdown, my anxiety has skyrocketed; the ability of my mind to calm itself when exposed to external elements (and sometimes, no external elements at all) is rudimentary at best now. This includes dealing with stressful dramatic events in movies.

I can still watch, say, TAXI DRIVER- a film *loaded* with psychologically stressful elements- because I've seen it before: I know the stressful elements. However, since the breakdown, I've been able to make it through exactly one movie I hadn't seen previously, DA 5 BLOODS.

With moves ranging from MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM to PINEAPPLE EXPRESS (!), my anxiety has reached a point where I've had to shut it off. I once thought to make movies for a living; now, my habit of re-watching old favorites is the only way I can watch movies at all. I don't know how long this will last; I don't know if I'll ever again know that moment as the lights go down, and I wait to begin the journey upon which the filmmaker will take me.

...man, I'm glad I'm on Lexapro.

comments
