Shanghai Mermaid

Last night, as a celebration of the Chinese New Year, I went to a club event called Shanghai Mermaid. People were dressed in clothing from the 20s and 30s, of various cultures; the space itself (Galapagos in Dumbo) had been fitted up with red Chinese lanterns and other scene-setting paraphenalia. (The main floor includes a pool of water, with walkways and tables set over the water's surface.) It was a nice chance to get out of the house, and be part of an environment that rather nicely matched the movie that's been running in my head of late (rather noirish); too, I'd like to spend more time in Dumbo, when the weather is more forgiving. (I particularly like the way that the Manhattan Bridge looms overhead, like the discarded toy of a giant child.)
