How did you get *seriously* interested in movies?

A lot of it was parents who were movie appreciaters -- Dad was practically a latent movie student (once he retired, he really got interested in how'd-they-make-it details) -- and the movies were easy to see and study, even when we were moving a lot. (Dad was career Navy.) I really started paying attention in high school, writing reviews for my school paper. I wrote papers on films in college, plus working for a year as a projectionist for one of my professors, and my senior thesis talked about both the psychology and the use of music in The Fisher King, as I'm interested n film music. After that, I did movie reviews an average of almost once a week for three years at my newspaper job.

LJ's been a good outlet since then for my movie writing, and I've gravitated towards movie reviewers (pros like [livejournal.com profile] coffeeinhell, [livejournal.com profile] leonardpart6 and Mike Russell (http://culturepulp.typepad.com) and thoughtful hobbyists like [livejournal.com profile] yendi) when getting to know people online. They've been encouraging. In fact some have asked rather pointedly why I'm not doing this for pay. I do want to review for pay. :-) I'll see what I can do...

And Robyn's neat and worthy, isn't she? I've known her online since 2003; she's on of my favorite LJ writers, and in fact a lot of my F-list came from hers, especially [livejournal.com profile] shadesong.
