coyotegoth1) Went to piano bar for a birthday party on a Saturday, which would have been even better if there hadn't been A) an extremely packed crowd (which isn't necessarily unusual for a Saturday night, especially as most of them were probably there for the show upstairs, but was still an Extremely Packed Crowd), B) some silly twit who couldn't seem to refrain from singing along with Kim Lee's set from right over her shoulder, taking up all the bar space ever, and generally straining the patience of those around her in a "Look- I'm being cute!" way, and C) a substitute pianist who likes to smack the piano with his hands to emphasize the rhythm.
...although crankiness aside, I did have a genuinely good time (crowd and my reaction to same aside); it was good to see everyone, and the birthday gift- a copy of the soundtrack to Ran- she’s a fellow film lover) was well received. Can't ask for much more than that.
2) Went to my friend Andy’s get-together in New Jersey on Sunday; mostly neighbors of theirs and Actor’s Studio folk. I’ve known Andy for about twenty years, and the two of us were old-school collectors, way back when (anyone else out there remember the late, lamented Dream Days comic book store in Syracuse, at 110 Montgomery St?). Accordingly, after a while, his wife Kelly feels obliged to stick her head into his study, where we’re holed up with Andy’s friend Spencer discussing such weighty issues as What the hell ever happened to John Carpenter? and I’m telling you, Adam Warlock is simply Elric dyed gold, with Stormbringer stuck to his forehead.
3) The subway stops in our neighborhood of late have been papered with variations on the "Met you on a L train… forgot to get your name" theme; this particular iteration describes how the author is searching for a tall, blond girl. Upon walking down the steps today, I saw a tall, blond girl looking at the poster- and reaching for her cell phone.
