Sure, Val Lewton, or the Wolf Man; the Brits had Dead of Night (an uneven anthology film, although the Michael Redgrave one makes me wish Cavalcanti had directed Magic), but most of the horror seems distinctly second-shelf. (And 40s horror, especially considering all that was going on in the world, certainly lacks the distinct character of, say, the 50s. A-bombs and teenagers and commies, oh my!) Too much of an emphasis on escapism?
