“I stealthily consult some notes I have made about his career, but before I have framed my first question he says, ‘I’ve no idea what we are going to say to each other. After all, where did we come from? Did you ever have a vision of the place we came from before we were born? I did, when I was about three years old. I used to dream about it a good deal. I even drew pictures of it.’ He leans forward confidentially. ‘It looked rather like Mexico,’ he says with quiet emphasis. Wind utterly removed from sails, I am silenced: who else would start a conversation like this?”
