Random curiosity- where are folks here WRT Baz Luhrmann's new adaptation of The Great Gatsby? I'm really torn, myself: while Luhrmann's concerns, and style, are not ones with which I feel a particular comity, he's absolutely a top-shelf auteurist filmmaker. It may not be Gatsby as I've known it, but it'll certainly be cinematically fascinating. Luhrmann is by no means a naturalistic filmmaker; one gets the sense (at least through my own superficial examination of the trailer and a few other bits and bobs) that he was trying to amp up the contemporary resonances. (You know what movie I would've *loved* to have seen Luhrmann make? Les Miz. It's perfect for his emotional concerns- it even has a statue of an elephant! And don't get me started on his and Oliver Stone's dueling Alexander the great projects...)
