Moving, stranger...
Mar. 28th, 2011 02:02 pmSometimes I wonder how many moves I've helped with, since I arrived in New York City. There was the one where the person who had sworn that everything was packed and ready to go was rocking back and forth on the floor in hysterics, as a team of movers (on the clock) looked uncertainly from her to me; the one where we all broke into songs from The Wizard of Oz at one point; the one from a building called Sage House, just down the street from one of my closest friends (and which wound up literally around the corner from another close friend- an agoraphobe, sadly). I've gotten to be skilled at the basic tasks of breaking down a situation and making things happen efficiently; even when (as yesterday) I was working with a hurt shoulder, I can generally pull my weight.
Out of all those many, many moves, this may have been the most bittersweet: helping
roadnotes and
baldanders pack for their move, now almost here. It's happening for excellent reasons; we'll see each other again; still, looking through random memorabilia has been an excellent reminder of just how much water has flowed under the bridge since I first met Roadnotes at a TES meeting, fifteen years ago and more. Meeting Soren, that first night at Rose's, as he beat time on the bartop with his fingers, and seeing at once how they completed each other. Too many people, too many memories, to name here. Perhaps the most touching article of memorabilia dating from the move: a book dating from the closing of Rose's Turn, with names and contact info for many of the regulars. (Including Crawford *sigh*.)(A small, random blessing: I randomly bumped into Kimlee- a waitperson/singer from Rose's- last night, and she happily signed it as well.) It certainly isn't mine, per se; someday, when my own time to leave the city comes, I'll find Kimlee or Michael or one of the other old regulars, and pass it on. For now, it's just one more touching memory, as I wish my friends Godspeed.
(Also, randomly- nice to see you,
tnh.)

More odd photos (including a couple of potentially NSFW ones) here. #19 gave me chills, have just seen "The Doctor Dances"; #49 was quite reminiscent of (the movie of) The Shining.
