Random: Stanley Kubrick died on this date, in 1999. When I heard the news, I didn't speak for a day; although we had broken up by then, my ex-fiancee later called me, to see how I was doing. I remember, back when I first moved to New York City, looking up his childhood address- an unremarkable building on Kingsbridge Road in the Bronx- and going there, to see where he had come from. (I once collected all the novels which were source material for his movies; it took me twenty-five years to find them all.) Other than Welles and Kurosawa, there is no director whose passing affected me in remotely the same way.
