3D dinosaur skeleton pancakes. If they had had these when I was a kid, I would've wound up a victim of terminal pancake poisoning.

From a comment in another LJ: "On a related retro note, I'm expecting to see Robert Heinlein: the Expanded Edition, in which his stories for Campbell are published in their original manuscript versions, as with Stranger and Red Planet.(I'd be particularly curious to see the original "If This Goes On-")"(I'm on the fence about using Heinlein's original story titles, though; Campbell's "The Roads Must Roll" is a much better title than Heinlein's "Roadtown".)

From the site info for CaboodleRanch, a shelter for homeless cats:

“Caboodle Ranch is now a permanent sanctuary for cats who have been kicked around by heartless people. There are many sad stories between all the cats I've taken in. Some almost starved to death, some of them wounded strays. I've seen many locked in cages for months in animal shelters and have taken in some of those too.

“Cats should be able to roam free, and at Caboodle Ranch, that's what they do. We are in the middle of 100 acres of wildlife. The cats follow me through the nature trails that I put in and maintain, they climb in tree forts that I've built and hide in underground dens I've dug for them.

“All cats have been spayed or neutered, all shots are kept up to date and I keep regular visits to the vet for each of them. I travel the 250 miles round-trip many times a week to work and back again to keep a safe haven for them to live. Every one of my expenses have come out of my own pocket and I do with very little so I can give them a happy life, but it isn't always easy.

“These animals need our help. If you'd like to help with donations of any kind, please contact me using the contact information I've provided on this website.”

This could be a peanut butter and borscht sandwich, but I find the concept fascinating: Broadway musical-themed LARPing.

Apparently, there was an animated 1994 TV version of Heinlein's Red Planet, featuring the voices of Mark Hamill and Roddy McDowell. How on earth did I not know this? (Second question: why, given his phenomenal sales, haven't there been more adaptations of Heinlein works? OK, Starship Troopers couldn't done better (and was a rather loose adaptation), but Puppet Masters did decently, for the B-movie it was. I don't know: maybe Hollywood filmmakers figure the didacticism and Pirandellian aspects of his later works aren't blockbuster-friendly, and I'm sure the Stranger rights situation (whatever that might be) is difficult... but the juveniles? I don't understand it.)

[livejournal.com profile] cleolinda leads some interesting discussion on emotional reaction to the deaths of fictional characters. (An interesting co-question: do the constant stream of characters returning from the dead in comic books (Marvel, I'm looking at you) constitute a false promise?)

Terry Pratchett makes his own sword from meteoric iron... and let’s just pause to contemplate the beauty of that concept, before wondering whether or not he’ll be obtaining a winged steed. (Sword picture here, BTW.)
