Wow- it's already the morning of the last full day on my time in SF (I'm flying out at 6:30 am tomorrow, which scarcely counts as a full day). SF has been wonderful, as always (as is my lovely hostess [livejournal.com profile] sophiescholl; having been to New Zealand since my last visit, I find myself more and more strongly reminded of Wellington. (I'd also forgotten just how hilly SF is: my legs, however, are doing an excellent job of reminding me on this point.)

Went to a lovely party thrown by [livejournal.com profile] feyandstrange and [livejournal.com profile] digitalsidhe, where I got to taste an 1895 martini:

3 dashes orange bitters
¾ oz. gin (Old Tom, in this instance)
½ oz. simple syrup
¾ oz. red/sweet vermouth

Stir over ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with lemon peel and, optionally, a maraschino cherry. (Also, note that the vermouth:gin ratio is 1:1 here; if I recall, the last martini I tasted had a 7:1 ratio.) Quite sweet by modern standards.

...as well as meeting [livejournal.com profile] glamtasm, [livejournal.com profile] iamradar, and several other nifty people, before jet lag reared its ugly head. Home; Vertigo; bed. Today, I walked along Haight Street into town; passed the house where the Grateful Dead used to live (now a resplendent purple; San Franciscans are quite free with house colors by NYC standards- I quite like it); then to Union Square ("when the red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin' along...") Out to Fisherman's Wharf, where the sea lions had returned (yay!), but were one sleepy seal pile of pinnipeds (boo!). The cab home drove past the apartment that was the exterior of Jimmy Stewart's apartment in Vertigo, which was a nice touch; soon, an expedition with [livejournal.com profile] feyandstrange and [livejournal.com profile] digitalsidhe to Sutro Baths, and then dinner.

I'm looking forward to Chicago- but San Francisco, I'll miss you.

A quick anecdote, concerning my lovely hostess [livejournal.com profile] sophiescholl: earlier this spring, Constance McMillen- the girl who was tricked into attending a false prom at a different location from that which her fellow students attended- came to visit San Francisco. Acting in her capacity as Ride Coordinator of Dykes With Bikes, my hostess arranged for Constance McMillen to be picked up by a limo- with a police escort into town.

Well played, [livejournal.com profile] sophiescholl; well played.
