As you know I'm hosting an LJ auction
graduate_maria to help raise money for my friend
theotoky who has been trying to finish her degree for the entire time (about 15 years) that I've known her. She supported an abuser so he could get his degree, and I was one of many people who helped her get out of that situation. Now that Maria is totally ready, willing and able to succeed for herself, we want to make sure she can.
More information about Maria: http://rm.livejournal.com/1876873.html
As of right now the total of donations Maria has received + value of open auctions + value of closed auctions shows we've raised about $1,400 towards Maria's tuition bill. We've still got $3,600 to go.
Current auctions that have 1 or no bids: http://community.livejournal.com/graduate_maria/12911.html
Paypal address if you'd just like to send a donation directly: mariatheo74 AT gmail DOT com
My contact information if you have transparency concerns (i.e., we will try to provide you with information you need to feel comfortable): Racheline AT gmail DOT com
Thing you can really do to help: Boost the signal.
Current auctions up close at 11:59 EST July 30.
More items and a lightening round coming soon!
THANK YOU.
coyotegoth again: While I've never been able to meet Maria in person, we've interacted for quite a while online; I can personally vouch for the fact that she is a lovely, gracious person, and that this project is well, well worth it. Go get 'em, M!

cat owners, your advice is requested
Jul. 29th, 2010 04:05 pmI've been taking care of my roommate's cats while she's away. This morning, after several weeks without incident, I discovered that they had done something unspeakable to her bedsheets, urgently necessitating a trip to the laundry. Being a relative novice to the ways of cats, should I read this as:
1) A protest against their owner's continued absence.
2) A decisive "No!" vote against the new brand of cat food (we ran out of their dry).
3) An existential statement against man's ecological depredations of the environment.
4) A subtle phrasing of their secret wish to wake up in Narnia.
5 __________ (other)

Jul. 29th, 2010 04:58 pmHrrm; based on poll answers so far, I'm going to 1) buy Shyness and Thing1 more of the old dry food, and 2) drag them to the vet if things don't improve. As this necessitates a) catching two insane, fleet-footed cats who have contact issues (I often don't see Shyness for days on end) and b) losing many SAN and HIT points in the process, I'm really hoping #1 does the trick. Thanks for advice, all!
1(Thing is actually named "Panda Bear," IIRC- I started calling him "Thing" when his owner changed his name so often that I couldn't keep track anymore; I may soon be calling him "Quadrupedal Shit Machine of Ultimate Despair," but that's another story.)

This makes me just that more exasperated with myself for missing the restored version, when it played right across the street from my workplace. I swear, this has been such a craptastic year for movies all in all, I barely even track new releases anymore: I'm seeing Despicable Me and hopefully Inception this weekend, but between the paucity of interesting new releases and the whole Polanski situation toxifying my feelings further, I'd almost rather stay home with my DVDs... and I never, ever thought I'd write those words. *sigh*
