"So let me ask: what books and movies (I'm editing this to add "and plays") (aside from slapstick comedies, where the dumbness is the point) feature dumb protagonists? Let us draw a distinction between "dumb" and "uneducated"; you can not know much in the way of facts, but be insightful and cunning enough to qualify as smart. To draw a distinction that Monica made, Celie (from the Color Purple) was certainly uneducated, but grew to be quite smart by the end.
"So. Dumb protagonists. Who has 'em?"
(Also, I originally had other plans for this afternoon; alas, they involved waking up before 12:30. Time for Plan B, which in no particular order involves 1) buying Godzilla toys; 2) the new Clash of the Titans (I bear a probably-outsized fondness for the original; once upon a time, my answering machine message was Olivier saying "Release the Kraken!"; 3) possibly checking out the Kuchar festival at Anthology; 4) possibly checking out the Dhalgren play; 5) possibly buying tickets for Anyone Can Whistle; 6) possibly getting together with friends from college; 7) a nighttime bike ride. Sort of like one of those math problems, neh? Anyone, what's your weekend looking like?)
