Having a bit of free time on my hands last night, I went to the Box Office Mojo site, with an eye to verifying or disproving the rumor that James Cameron's films have now outgrossed George Lucas's. (For purposes of comparison, I added cumulative total grosses for Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis- granted that Spielberg has directed more movies than the first three put together.) One should take the resultant figures with a grain or two of salt: for one thing, I have no idea how accurate BOM's figures are. For another, they (from what I can tell) make no effort to account for the rise in ticket prices that has happened from the early 70s (when Lucas started directing) until now; nor do they account for the fact that blockbuster movies are booked into many more theaters than previously. (Per BOM, Star Wars was booked into 1,750 theaters during its widest period of release; by way of comparison, Avatar was booked into 3,461.)
