I'm still recovering from Where the Wild Things Are, in the best possible way. Spike Jonze may well be the greatest Hollywood director of fantasy to come down the pike since Terry Gilliam; he gets his effects without Gilliam's distorting wide-angle lenses and often-cartoonish acting and design: merely a simple, "Oh, by the way? That kid in the wolf suit is playing with monsters, and they're ten feet tall." Jonze sees the world the way a child does- not the hyped-up childhood of Steven Spielberg and his successors, simply a moving conviction that if you can sail across the sea in a boat, there will be monsters, and if you're lucky, you can be their king.
