I went to my college campus- SUNY Purchase- this weekend. (I last went there almost ten years ago, as covered in this, my third entry ever. I wince as I read the trying-too-hard prose, and resist the urge to rewrite it all. If nothing else, LJ has helped me develop a more colloquial first person writing voice.) At first, I was struck largely by the changes: the mall, an open space in my time, has been largely built up; the library is decorated with signs that make it look like an amusement park; the large Henry Moore sculpture that sat on the mall in my day has been moved to just inside the main entrance. Then, we started passing places I knew: the spot where I unloaded my things from my dad's car for the first time. The window of the room where I spent my first night with Julie. The film building, including the sound stage where Todd Haynes shot part of Poison- which I worked on- and the film store where I'd take out equipment. Memory after memory, on and on and on.

A campaign has been launched to win a posthumous apology for computer pioneer Alan Turing over his conviction for homosexuality (a criminal offense in England until 1967).

The brilliant mathematician, who spent his key years at Manchester University, is hailed as one of the founders of modern computing.

But a conviction for homosexuality effectively ended his career. Turing went on to commit suicide in 1954, aged just 41.
