Apr. 19th, 2009 03:37 pmThis is a nice article to come home to- it's about how the kakapo (a rather absurd type of flightless parrot that I'm quite fond of) is seeing an upswing in its breeding over the last few years. (There are roughly 125 kakapos now, bred on an island off the coast of New Zealand that has been cleared of all predatory animals; back around 1990, there were only about 50 of them. I remember Douglas Adams writing about them in Last Chance to See, a book in which he discusses animals on the brink of extinction (including the white rhinoceros, since declared extinct in the wild.) I wish Douglas Adams could have seen this; long may the kakapo boom.
(Also, a link to my last NZ photopost; relinking simply because the computer from which I posted originally had time/dating issues, and my post may have accidentally wound up in the Precambrian era, for all I know.)
