1) The location for Rivendell.
2) The location where Saruman and Gandaldf stroll in the gardens of Isengard.
3) The location of the River Anduin (albeit somewhat upstream of where they actually shot the boating scenes.)
4) The location where Frodo spots the approach of the Ringwraith coming down the path, before he and the others hide after tumbling down the hill. (I also found what I'm 80% sure is the place where the four of them hid, although ten years' undergrowth and the removal of the fake tree that Weta installed for the scene made positive identification impossible.) Collection of a pine cone from the site, for a friend. (Incidentally, this location was about five minutes' walk from where I'm staying, right up the steepest hill ever.)
5) An impromptu visit to Pekerua Bay, Peter Jackson's childhood home. Saw what I *think* was his old house- it looks like the house from family photos, as seen in books on him- but decline to take a picture, which would cross a boundary between film geek tourism and invasion of privacy in my head.
6) Am gifted with a copy, handwritten by Daniel Reeves, of his "There and Back Again" title page of Bilbo's book, as created for the films, due to the matchless generosity of
tyellas. Easily the best present since seeing Fellowship at a midnight showing on my birthday, back in 2001.
Oh, New Zealand, I...*THUD*
