Rest in peace, Sydney Pollack. An Oscar-winning (Out of Africa) director who also did one of my favorite films (Tootsie), I liked him even better as an actor- Eyes Wide Shut; Husbands and Wives (the only Allen film of the last 20 years I'd willingly re-view); the aforementioned Tootsie, where he plays Hoffman's put-upon agent ("A tomato doesn't have logic!"), or for his work as a producer, with such directors as the late Anthony Minghella. He'll be missed.

Apparently, a large portion of Joseph Minion’s screenplay for the Martin Scorsese movie After Hours was taken- without credit or permission- from “Lies,” a 1982 NPR Playhouse monologue by Joe Frank. (Incidentally, did you know that After Hours was originally intended to be Tim Burton’s feature directing debut? Burton graciously stepped aside when Scorsese, on the rebound after the cancellation of his 1983 attempt to film The Last Temptation of Christ (which he later filmed in 1988), needed a project he could bring to completion quickly.)

Update to the post earlier today, about a kindergarten teacher who allowed one child's classmates to vote him out of the class: She's been removed from classroom duties until further action may be determined.

Just had a happy plot idea for the next section of this story, set in the Harry Potter universe roughly nineteen years after the events of Deathly Hallows. In it, Harry Potter's son comes to Hogwarts just as Slytherin House is being reopened, after a nineteen-year shutdown. This is getting a nice YA buzz; I just wish I'd understood that doing this meant inventing over a hundred students, backstories and all...
