Thanks again, N!
Dec. 22nd, 2007 02:51 pmThe excellent reviews I'd heard about Sweeney Todd are fully merited; Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, I'm pleased to say, do full honor to their roles. (While their vocal chops may not equal those of Cariou and Lansbury, I'd rather watch a good actor who's not *quite* there vocally than an excellent singer who's not there emotionally, particularly when it comes to Sondheim.) There are some songs I miss ("The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" isn't here, which surprised me; other cuts, like the judge's version of "Johanna", make more sense- even if Alan Rickman's doing that number would have made the Internet burst into flames), but overall, the material suits Tim Burton to a T, and brings out the best in his storytelling. That said, if watching throats being slit isn't to your taste, you may not want to see this; it's a bloody movie.
