subway story

Had one of those New York moments that make me smile today. I'm sitting on the subway, with a copy of Japanese for Dummies mouthing Japanese verbs to myself. Suddenly, a perky- there is no other word- blond woman sits next to me.

Her: (Quickly rat tled-off Japanese sentence.)

me: Umm, I haven't gotten to that page yet...

For the next fifteen minutes, we discuss how I've wanted to study Japanese for years; how she worked as a language teacher in Asia; travel in general, winding up with her writing a book title on the back of a card. As I'm about to get up, she shyly turns it over to reveal the name of a Christian meeting group on the back, and says, "I meant to ask you if you were interested in this, but I got lost in the conversation."

Although not a Christian myself, I was genuinely appreciative, and held onto the card; wherever you are at the moment, Sarah from Toronto, you made my afternoon a little brighter. Thank you.

Also: just got to AIM with drood and talk on the phone with evening_rush; delightful in both instances. Very glad to hear you're both okay, reive and ladypeculiar.h
