If you get a chance, do try to see John Carter in a theater. The incredibly inept ad campaign aside, it's a rousing adventure movie, and- from what I remember from a 35-year-old read- quite reasonably faithful to Burroughs, as well. (As Bunche points out, one of the reasons so many of the elements in the movie may feel familiar is that Lucas, Cameron, et al. borrowed liberally from Burroughs in the first place.) Well, well worth seeing in a theater.
